The Second World War saw the flying machine leap to the forefront of warfare, and the role of aircraft in that war was absolutely pivotal. But after the war, the aircraft that had helped defend Britain, and reclaim freedom in Europe, were sent for scrap in huge numbers. Whole types quickly became extinct and it seemed that nobody cared. But in the sixties, a small but dedicated band decided to take up the lead of the pre-war pioneer Shuttleworth and Nash collections, and began to save some of these irreplaceable aircraft for posterity. Soon afterwards the British Aircraft Preservation Council was formed, and aircraft preservation and restoration in Britain really took off. Today there are hundreds of organizations devoted to the rescue and preservation of historic aircraft, and the fruits of their labours may be seen in over sixty museums, and at air shows all over the country.

In this book Alec Brew tells the whole story of the British aircraft preservation movement, from early days at Old Warden and the Science Museum, through the establishment of the famous, but now long-past, Skyfame and Strathallan museums, and the founding of so many important preservation groups, to the present day, where every area of the country can boast its own collection of aircraft. And what do many of these collections contain ? Why, ade Havilland Vampire and a Mignet Flying Flea of course !
