Descriptif

Britain’s Cold War began in 1945 after the fall of Nazi Germany. By 1946 Europe had quickly divided into two spheres of influence with East distrusting West and vice versa. Clearly the next war would be one between Communist and Capitalist ideals.

The next forty-five years were punctuated by a war of ideologies, fought not on the battlefields of Europe but by proxi in Korea, Vietnam, Afghanistan and numerous other small-scale hot spots in Asia and Africa. The threat of mutually assured destruction, with the appropriate acronym MAD, ensured that the nuclear powers never took the final step to fully committed military engagement. However they planned for the day right up to 1991.

Britain became a mini fortress whose protection was considered mandatory by the Pentagon. Redundant RAF stations soon became home to Phantoms, A-10s and American nuclear weapons. Meanwhime the British Government embarked on its own defence of the United Kingdom developing missile sites, radar installations, civilian bunker networks and its own nuclear deterrent.
